Cancer, the Vet, and the ER have taken over my life this week...

Sorry for the lack of "real" posts lately. I've kinda been stressed and going through alot lately. I don't think I've ever mentioned the cancer on my blog before. My Mummy was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few years ago. Late last week, her doctor said my Mum's levels were at 16 but she wanted to see them at 14. Not good but not that bad. So, that kinda stressed me out this week along with the fact that my Mum will be going through radiation again in a couple of weeks not to mention she has to take some kind of nuclear medicine that gives her AWFUL side effects. Although, the doctor came back saying that her cancer is not detectable anymore on some test they ran. Maybe, it was a blood test or something. My Mum's cancer was detected VERY EARLY through a mishap. She and my Father were vacationing in Vegas for their 30th wedding anniversary. When they returned, my Mum felt really tired and weak. She just attributed it to jet lag. However, I ended up taking my Mother to the hospital; because, she wasn't getting any better. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with her so they did numerous x-rays/tests until they decided to do a CT scan. After all was said and done, she had a terrible virus from which she must have picked up in Vegas. However, the CT scan showed nodules on her thyroid. To make a long story short, they grew, some more appeared, she had her thyroid removed, the thyroid tested positive for cancer cells, and FYI, they can't "technically" remove your ENTIRE thyroid. Some of the thyroid is in the vocal chords. Therefore, that's where the radiation comes in to help kill off the thyroid cells in the chords. That's the story in a nutshell. However, this has been an ongoing process for the past 3 years.

LC noticed that my Puggy was bleeding. He moves her hair and sees an oozing sore that is about the size of a quarter. She had to make a trip to the vet. They don't know what it is since I don't know how the sore came about. They said it could be a cut, hot spot, a burst pimple, etc. They cleaned and shaved the area and gave me some antibiotic spray to put on her. Seriously, she is like MY CHILD so to see a big sore on her had me to tears and was worried she was sick. But, she's fine, and as sweet and playful as ever. The sore is healing nicely, and it seems she hasn't bothered it much.

Yesterday, I received a phone call from my Mother that my cousin was being air lifted to The Med's Trauma ER (in case you don't know, The Med in Memphis has the best trauma unit in the region, they are seriously VERY GOOD). He was working outside Memphis in a small town called Selmer. A door fell and sliced his arm. He had a vertical cut of about 8 inches on his forearm that cut all the way to the bone. He was air lifted from the small hospital in Selmer to The Med in Memphis. The Trauma ER had already been prepared for his arrival. The Med finally got the bleeding to a minimum and he was rushed into surgery. They had to remove one of the two arteries in his arm. He can't feel his thumb right now but can wiggle his other fingers. However, the doctor said this morning that he isn't getting the movement that he should, and they will decide tomorrow whether or not another surgery is needed.

So, all of this is why I've been absent lately. For me at least, when it rains it pours.....

Oh my goodness Southern Belle - you have a lot on your plate! We'll keep your family in our thoughts. And I agree - it is so hard to see our furbabies injured or sick. Hope your little girl is better quickly!

Lucky was bleeding last night too! Weird! He was bleeding last night because he literally tried to rip his toenail out! You know the little one on the side of some dogs nails called the du nail. I was freaking out, and then I realized. He is going to the vet in the morning to get it clipped. Apparently, I can get it removed but it is super expensive (not good right now) and he will be in pain. Oh, our dogs are like our children!
