Will I be ready?

I want to run the Music City Half Marathon in April. I went for a run for the first time in a looooooong time. We're talking a little over a year people. See, I used to be fit. I used to run 5ks. But then, I cut my foot, and I met LC. All that went down the drain. I've always been a walker/runner. In college, I did it to stay in shape truthfully? I did it to work off all the alcohol I drank the night before and maintain the weight I was at without watching anything I ate. For awhile now, I have been feeling sluggish and tired. I know what the problem is. Before you even ask, yes, I take a multi-vitamin everyday along with Vitamin C. It's because I'm not active. I don't work out. This is the second time in my life that I gone more than a year without running. And just like the last time, I feel tired ALL THE TIME.
Last night, I went to take Puggy to the bathroom when I got home. All of the sudden, it just hit me. I just started to run. I ran, and I ran. I ran for a mile. That was all I could do. It's official. I'm a OUT OF SHAPE. I plan on getting into the groove again. I feel so much better today. I'm tired, but that's because I stayed up til almost midnight. It's a different kind of tired. Not sluggish, out of energy, tired, but didn't get enough sleep tired. For once, I feel better. I have more energy than normal even though I'm tired. I had totally forgot why I loved running in the first place. So, I'm in my place again. My friends are talking about running the Music City Half Marathon in April in Nashville. I want to do it. However, I'm not sure if I'll be ready, fit-wise, by then. I can barely run a mile now, and it only gives me 4 months to train. My friend Southern Domestic Diva sent me a website for training. I think since I'm so out of shape that I will start with the 8 week 5k training, and then for the last two months do the hlaf training. Thoughts??? Have any of y'all decided to this before? Suggestions are welcome!

I myself am not a runner, but do workout on a regular basis (now - didn't used to!). It has made such a difference in my energy levels! I honestly am not a huge fan, but know that it's something I have to do, sigh!

I am so impressed you ran a mile without running in so long! I am not a runner, and there is no way I could ever run a mile without training. How horrible is that! I think you can totally do the half marathon! You seem very committed and happy to be back running!

GOOD LUCK! I don't even want to admit how long it took me to be able to run a mile without stopping (we're talking MONTHS!)

Girl, I am very impressed. I've never been a runner (wish I was) so I am fascinated by anyone who takes that on!

I think you can do it. And it gives you something to work towards.

Yes! you have plenty of time! Even most marathon training plans are 15-18 weeks. You just have to steadily increase your mileage but not too much so you don't get hurt. I would start with a weekly goal (5 miles a week, 7 miles a week, etc.) and increase it a little each week. The most I ever ran at a time before I ran my first half marathon was 10 miles. GOOD LUCK!!

Good for you Miss Belle, that is such a huge step! You really are spot-on in talking about the 'good' tired versus the sluggish inertia I have when I don't work out. I'm sending you a big smile and an even bigger hug. :)

I say go for it! I did my first half-marathon a few months ago and trained in less than 4 months. If you are not super competitive with your time... you always have the run/walk option. :)

I got a few months into training several years ago, but it was when the DC snipers hit so our group quit. I have a bum knee now. I so wish I had been able to complete a marathon. It's an amazing goal. I wish you the best of luck. Oh and I started out not much of a runner. You would be amazed at how fast you build up endurance!

I did the Music City in 2007, when I was still living in Nashville. I went from total couch potato to run/walking the race with three months' training. I started in mid-January for the April race. Stick to two/three days a week, and increasingly long sessions on Saturdays. And do at least one day a week outside!

Enjoy!!

I did the Couch to 5K and loved it. Now I'm recovering from Achilles Tendonitis and can't run. If I can kick this - I intend to train for the Music City 1/2 (I live in Nashville) and would love a bloggy running buddy!
